Guterl was the director/chair of American Studies at Indiana from 2005-2012, the chair of American Studies at Brown from 2012-2022, and the co-Chair of Brown University’s Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Board from 2016-2022. With a broad-based experience working with faculty, staff, students, and the administration, Guterl often advises universities and corporations on DEI matters, with a particular focus on mixed-methods diagnostic work in sometimes difficult contexts, conflict mediation, reputational risk management, the creation of consensus-based diversity and inclusion models, and long-term change management. He is regularly asked to review all manner of units, departments, schools, and programs.
